Embrace the Variety: A Trio of Reds for Spring

I love spring in Oregon, in part because of the variety of daily experiences. I love taking in the the rotating rainbow of flowers, the “if you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes”, the sunny afternoons in t-shirts, followed by the cozy sweater bundled evenings. Even at the Farmer’s market, the beef short-ribs for braising are as appealing as the fresh asparagus and garlic scapes. But with a market haul like that, what are we supposed to drink?

While the season for rich, sturdy red wines is waning, I reach for those versatile, friendly, and fresh reds to bridge the seasons.

The Perfect Shoulder Season Red 3-Pack

Domaine Lelais Envie d’Aunis 2022

Domaine Lelais is tucked in the minuscule appellation of Jasnière, encompassed within the slightly larger Côteaux du Loir appellation. While we originally went looking for Chenin Blanc, we were delighted to find this stunning red made from Pineau d’Aunis. The name Pineau refers to the pinecone-shaped grape clusters, but I also find a hint of pine on the nose, along with warm baking spices. It’s a lighter-bodied red wine, full of refreshing red fruit and crisp finish, that reminds me of a walk in the Oregon woods after a spring rain.

Domaine du Tavé Cuvée Sensation 2021

This is my go-to red that goes with practically everything - something to sip on while kicking back on the patio or an easy-going glass of red to go with those short ribs. Full of red and black fruit from the Grenache, a whiff of coffee and fennel from the Mourvedre, and a hint of black pepper from the Syrah, with no oak to cover up the fruit, and finishing with a rich and savory texture to tie it all together.

Pupillo Re Frederico 2022

Right off the bat, like Carmella's other wines, you get an aromatic explosion; this 100% pure Nero d’Avola begins with dark plum, a whiff of red fruit, followed by a savory blend of dried herbs, a sprinkle of black pepper, and a hint of licorice. On the palate, this is elegant and vivid with an acidity that will match the freshness of spring vegetables, but a structure that will hold up to heartier meals as well.
